Building connections between non-Indigenous and Indigenous businesses through capacity-building

The Grand Economic Circle of Indigenous Peoples and Quebec (GECIPQ) movement, which was launched in 2021, moves from region to region. Through regional economic circles, business communities and municipal sectors have the opportunity to make concrete commitments with a view to enabling a greater inclusion of Indigenous peoples in the Quebec economy.

This historic movement is bringing about real change for Indigenous peoples by helping to pave the way for reconciliation so that all members of the Indigenous community can regain their place in the regional and provincial economy.

But after four years, what does the path travelled so far represent? What implemented commitments are generating concrete socioeconomic benefits for Indigenous peoples in Quebec?

Today, the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Economic Development Commission (FNQLEDC) would like to present to you an initiative of the Conseil du patronat du Québec (CPQ), which stems directly from a commitment that was made during the 2021 Grand Economic Circle!

Context

The desire to work towards economic reconciliation with the First Nations and the Inuit is at the heart of the CPQ’s commitments, which were stated at the 2021 GECIPQ. For the CPQ, the establishment of business relationships between non-Indigenous and Indigenous businesses must serve to strengthen connections between the Quebec community and the First Nations communities and nations while offering mutually beneficial economic opportunities.

It is with this in mind that the CPQ is launching its co-development groups project, for which it is currently recruiting Indigenous and non-Indigenous leaders, entrepreneurs and managers to form six start-up groups in the winter of 2025. This CPQ initiative offers a unique opportunity for these participants to create connections, develop business relationships and find solutions to today’s challenges through exchanges with peers.

How will the experience go?

Participants will be accompanied by a human resources specialist, experienced in the co-development approach, who will guide them through a structured process while remaining flexible with a view to responding to the specific realities and challenges of managers.

The group, composed of six to eight participants, will meet for a number of sessions equivalent to the number of members. During each session, each leader or manager will have the opportunity to share a challenge, a business problem or an aspect of their professional practice that they wish to explore in more depth. The objective is to stimulate collective reflection and enrich the action capacities of each participant, while drawing on the contributions and expertise of the other members of the group.
